Part of our buying and consumption involves packaging. Everything we buy seems to come in a container, a disposable container. Its a cost-effective way for manufacturers to get products to consumers.
All that packaging adds up to a huge amount, about 3lb of waste per person per day. Recycling and composting a portion of that waste will help remove non-biodegradable materials from the environment and use less raw materials to make packaging.
Because raw materials and locations for rubbish (that don't affect sanitation) are finite. If the human race is to continue for long recycling will be the only way.
