Questions about solar power?

Linlyons is correct that it doesn't really matter how many square feet you are talking about, that really only relates to lighting or heating. But I'll use our home as an example for you. It is 1400 square feet. The electricity comes completely from the sun and wind. Our solar array is 1.4 kw, and turbine is 1kw. The solar array and turbine provide electricity for a refrigerator, freezer, TV, stereo, DVD player, all lights, the washer and dryer and occasional use of power tools.

What is important to note is that while our small array and turbine provide all the electricity, the dryer is LP, as is the main furnace and water heater. To switch those items over to electricity would increase the size of our array to 5 or 6 times what it is now. To install our current equipment today might cost you $7500 USD. Then you would never have to pay an electric bill. Our system provides an average of 5.5 kwh per day, which at the end of the month might cost you $35. You could also invest that same $7500 in long term bonds and simply pay the electric company with the interest on the bonds. You just have to decide what you want to do in life. Some people grow tomatoes in their gardern even though it is less expensive and more convenient to buy them at the store. We just grow electrons in ours. Take care, Rudydoo

So many questions, so little information.

House or apartment?

Insulation or not?

Alaska, Florida, or somewhere in between?

Electric or gas heat?

And stove?

And water heater?

What are you going to do in that space?

Live?

Run a business?

Are you going to be there all the time?

How many electricity using toys (computers) do you have?

Are you attached to the electric grid?

Are you out in the boonies an need to store electricity for night time?

If you're connected to the grid, and can average out your use over a year, maybe you'll be about where I am.

My system generated about 10 KwH today.

It produces more during the summer.

My AC uses more in the summer, but in the winter, I use gas to heat the house.

Over a year, I come out pretty even.

Indeed, while estimates can be given for residential usage, you're asking a vague question without providing a sufficient context.

Solar Panels vary in size, you can say 5'x3' but there are others, and the power rating varies considerably as well, but say 200-250W, if you want.

Still, it depends on where you are located too.

Depends on whats inside those 1000 square feet space, there are various types of solar panels, what you need to calculate how much you need, if for example you need 10KW, depends on the panel you need, 1KW panel if its the cheapest could start from $400 per panel, and good ones could start from $1,000 then equipment and other junk could end you with $15,000 and thats not including good batteries if you want energy for the night.

More than a wood burning fire place and chimney or hot belly stove and stovepipe.

I was just wondering, how much would it cost to fully power a 1000sqft area through solar power? How many panels would be needed to power this 1000sqft space? About how many kW total would be produced using these panels? Thank you.
