Its not wierd but its unusual in that most teenagers, and adults too for that matter, don't have a social conscience and wouldn't want to waste their time doing something that didnt benefit them personally. However what you're doing is selfless and exemplary, if more people did asyou did there would be so much less litter around as its been proven that the state of the environment either encourages or discourages people to drop litter themselves. It would be advisable to wear disposable gloves whenyou do so and always be careful that you dont come in any contact with needles from drug taking. Never under-estimate the positive power of what you're doing. For instance, the wierd looks you get could be from people thinking 'my goodness, someone cares about this environment to want to improve it... and its a teenager, I thought all teenagers didnt care and were vandels'. That person could go home thinking about what they'd witnessed in a profound way because the sight has challenged a lot of their negative beliefs about people and their neighbourhood. So enjoy the looks, there is nothing to be ashamed of and everything to be proud of as you do your little bit in a society that has largely stopped caring through apathy, dispiritedness and a feeling of futility. Maybe you could influence others to join you, pick an area of very bad litter and get your school to help you organize a litter picking party with student volunteers tidying up a whole area, get the local paper to report on it as you transform a litter black spot back to respectability. you could be the trail blazer for your whole neighbourhood to take up your example!
I can't say that I share your passion for picking up litter but I far prefer an un-littered scene to one strewn with litter. To that end, I spent several years organizing stream cleanups for a local watershed association. Perhaps you could do the same.
