Realities of living off the land?

There is a tremendous amount of variables to consider. Usually living off the land would be somewhere in higher elevations which would affect what you can grow and can't. Certain things require longer growing time and how much one needs. If you are planning to do this high in the mountains then winter begins sooner for you and you will need more food to get you through. Water supply and insect infestation are major concerns as well as soil content and sunlight. Now it is probable best advised to grow what you can and gather the rest, such as pine nuts, berries, wild asparagus etc. To give just a general, and if you were able to get enough fat content otherwise You would need at least 450 lbs of fruits veggies and grains to sustain you for 180 days. http://www.usda.gov/factbook/chapter1.ht...

My Garden is 30' by 30' and will supply Myself and My Wife for a Year if properly attended. Also on 1/2 acre I can raise sufficient Livestock to supply of Us with Meat for a Year. I live in Ontario Canada and Our growing season starts late May and continues till late September. If You have two acres of good land You will have plenty of land for a House and Shed and WorkShop Garage and still have enough to raise Your crops and livestock. This will easily look after a Family of Four. Suggest You visit a good BookStore and get a few books on Gardening and raising Livestock Also look for books on Butchering and raising Pig's and Chickens and Rabbits and Goat's and Sheep because before You are finished You will be a Jack of all Trades.

A lot depends on the land, and the growing season.

You also have to deal with a pretty repetitive diet.

You'll note that in all the answers, there will be no mention of how to keep yourself warm when it gets cold.

And,obviously, you won't have any AC at all.

Hot water will be a rare luxury.

One hopes you have a good well. And like pumping your water.

Concerning dirty dishes, you'll become a lot more tolerant of "almost clean" stuff.

Clean clothes every day isn't going to happen.

Toilet paper is a really nice luxury.

OH yeah, and have a good time. :)

Sell your computer and phone. Buy a shovel and ax. Get to work. Experience in your own environment is the only way you will know what you need. If all you want to know is the amount of food you eat, then write down what you eat. You won't get much further than that, anyway. You'll be shocked when you find out how much you eat, and you're not willing to give up your computer and phone.

MOST books/articles/etc. suggest a minimum of 40 acres of good land since you have to take into account not only food, but heating during winter in most places; and that requires a renewable stand of trees, among other things.

Not to mention some other things like toilet paper, clothes, fuel, electricity and electronics, tools, etc.

For a 'modern' lifestyle, it just is NOT feasible to attempt to be totally self sustaining.

THAT is why our societies evolved.

The true desire is to live as close to the land as possible. ... I took a week off from work and went on a humanitarian mission.I will suggest you to plant more crops only for your needs is better than to plant one crop more. You don't take tension on your metabolism. It will help you a lot.

:)

Depending the type of crops and the frequency of the seasonal crop rotation- 10 acres would sustain you

also you could fish and .or only eat vegetables and fish and musrooms.

A lot.

i've been educating myself in survival skills because it couldnt hurt. but if i were to live solely off the land, how much crops would have to be planted to sustain myself? im 17, high metabolism and i weigh 145lbs if that helps at all.
