What makes a building "green"?

Posted at: 2015-05-24
A building is considered green if it harmonizes the social, economic, and resource impacts that result from its design and operation. For example, a green building could reduce energy and water needs, maintain good indoor environmental quality, use sustainably harvested materials, increase occupant comfort, or operate cost effectively. Often it is the integration of all of these building processes that truly makes a building green. GSA’s Sustainable Facilities Tool (www.sftool.gov) is a resource I've recently used that goes into detail about how legislation defines a “green” building and gives tips and best practices to consider when designing one.
