Should me and my roommate split his discount?

No, he shouldn't have to split it with you.

He is paying his entire share of the rent with cash for part of it and work for the other part of it. The discount is just a way of paying him. And if he was paid - he would turn around and give it back as rent. If he got a part time job earning money - you wouldn't expect a share of it, would you?

I'll bet if you turned this around - and you got that job and the discount - you wouldn't be out here asking if you should share the discount with roommate. And I'll bet you don't want to go help him with the job either.

Your share of the rent didn't go up. His share - he works for.

No, you don't get to share it. It's no different than if they were paying him directly and it worked out to be exactly 50% of the rent. At the end of the month, he would pay his 1/2 of the rent and you would pay your half which is exactly the position you are in now.

An amount equal to half of his rent will be added to Box 1 of his W-2 and he will have to pay taxes on it. It's not free, he is still paying for it,

Of course not. He has a part time job and gets paid immediately directed to the LL. It's really a barter system. Your option is to get a part time job that pays your share of the rent that you hand to the LL. He has no obligation to share his part time income with you just as you have no obligation to share your PT income with him.

Surely getting discount on rent is a perk of HIS job, not yours surely

So it would be entirely HIS decision whether he wants to share with you

If you got a $1000 bonus from work next month, would you share it with your roommate or would you say 'my job, my perk'?

Of course not - he is the one doing the work, not you (unless, of course, you want to split your paycheck with him).

OK Thanks Guys, This was where i was starting to lean, i just wanted to make sure, due to some friends telling me to investigate it.....idk why.
