Geothermal Energy in Australia?

Does Australia have geothermal energy in place? if not, why? and if there is, how long has it been goign for or trialing for?

thanks!

The Australian Government has already allocated around $200 million of funding to support geothermal and with the introduction of the Clean Energy Future package is providing an unprecedented level of support to attract investment in clean energy more generally.

In 2013/14 the Government is also establishing the new commercially-oriented $10 billion Clean Energy Finance Corporation to be located in Sydney.

The Clean Energy Finance Corporation will identify projects and remove barriers that would otherwise prevent the financing of large-scale renewable energy projects.

As usual , lots of misinformation is spread about this and all other renewable energy .

There are at least 11 private projects (incl Origin , Pacific Hydro etc) underway in Victoria, SA, Qld & WA - the type of projects in Australia are complex (compared with near surface geothermal in NZ, Iceland etc) and involve drilling to depths of 5km mainly in granite. I dont know of any long term successful deep geothermal projects anywhere in the world - it is a developing industry & perhaps we will see success in 5 - 10 years

The benefits , when finally successful are obvious and it seems one of the few areas where Australia is at the forefront of research

Geothermal energy is the energy produced by the earth. The most common example is a geothermal power plant which uses the water heated deep inside the earth to turn turbines to create electrical power...

Australia has one test well in South Australia . It is being payed for by the federal government . So fare it has not been a success. Many millions of dollars have been given to the company and it doesn't look like it's going to work so it's more taxpayers money down the drain . It has been going for a few years now.

One of the reasons we are 240 billion in dept
