It's worth while to look into keeping your electric bill down, but solar electric is probably not cost effective for you.
The economics of solar-electric depends on your location. In particular, how much government subsides you can get directly and through grid-tie rates. At 0.10 $/kWH for grid power, it's unlikely to be enough for it to make economic sense.
But if you are in an area where solar is popular, it shouldn't be that hard to find out.
Look at solar hot water while you are at it. Solar hot water tends to have a lot better payback than solar electric.
But there are other ways to save money. What about awnings (retractable or not) to keep the direct sunlight out of your house? You could make your own shade.
The cost of solar power is about 38 cents per kwh while power from coal is about 1 cent per kwh and power from natural gas is about 12 cents per kwh. You might want to wait till the cost of solar power drops below 12 cents per kwh. Meanwhile, consider a white roof.
without a doubt go for solar,as it is good for your pocket and nature.
As long as you'll have change for what you need, yes.
My neighbor just cut down A massive tree which provided a substantial amount of shade on my house. Now that it is gone my electric bill will increase. On a positive note, I have a long southern facing roof which will get uninterrupted sunlight for 8+ hours a day. I was at 500kWh in June, 715 in July, and 480 in August. These will all be higher next year. I pay around .10$ a kWh not including delivery. Will it be worth my time to research going solar?
