Tell people the after effects if they do not recycle. Tell them it helps our enviornmemt, organisms, and economy. Recycling even a few items makes a big impact :)
They need as much customer service as landfills provide. People don't mind sending their stuff to the dump because they make it very easy by accepting everything, providing a container where you can mix it all together, and picking it up at your curb. Something else that landfills do that recycle centers don't is find garbage that can be sent elsewhere. If for example they don't want boards in their landfill, they will pick out all the boards and sell them to a mill. Recycle centers could do the same thing with stuff that they can't recycle. If they can't recycle a certain type of plastic they could pick it out and send it to someone who can instead of making you use separate centers for separate materials.
People don't recycle because:
1. It costs more. The cost for collection has increased with mandatory recycling.
2. It takes time, to make the mandatory separations.
People don't recycle because it saves time, resources, and energy. Paper comes from the pulp cultivated from tree farms. Paper trees are genetically altered to grow fast and be harvested. Yes....trees are a renewable resource. Landfills will never overtake civilization either. The entire population of the world can fit on Maryland. Land is not the problem. There's more than plenty of space for us to dump our filth. Plastic creates extremely toxic fumes during the recycling process and costs 100x more energy compared to just making it out of fresh petroleum. And oil will wont be running out for thousands of years to come. Recycling is bullshit. I don't recycle, but I still do my best to reduce the amount of waste I produce.
