You don't without good reasons like your arrested, medical with a written docs exam - like deafness, handicapped in a way you cannot sit long, nothing you stated would get you out of it ... no way to know the questions , they ask questions pertinent to the case - if it's Death Penalty they ask are you for or against ... things like that !
I have NEVER been paid for jury duty. My bosses always wrote on letterheads that I could not be missed from work at that time.
You have to show up for it... There is no way of getting out of that, but you can try to get out of being chosen for the jury by acting racist or something along those lines, but I wouldn't recommend that... It is you're civic duty to be part of a jury panel, it sucks but its your duty to your country, we all have to do it
You not only have time to do this, and most employers pay you for taking the time off, but it is your civic duty to do this. It's a lot more interesting than you think. Some counties and states will let you postpone it one time. I'm sure all this information is on the jury summons you received, along with a phone number you can call to get answers to your questions. What do you mean, what are you supposed to tell your boss? "Hey, boss, I got summoned for jury duty and here is a copy of the summons. I will need the day off."
