Estas materias primas, además de ser muy contaminantes, pronto serán demasiado escasas como para proveer la energía suficiente para el alto consumo mundial.

Por ello, una alternativa que cada vez cobra mayor relevancia, es el aprovechamiento de energías renovables, dentro de las que encontramos a la solar. Existen dos sistemas: térmico y fotovoltaico. La diferencia radica en sus distintas formas de almacenamiento y, por lo tanto, en sus diferentes aplicaciones; mientras el primero se utiliza en sistemas de calefacción o la obtención de agua caliente, el segundo se destina a la transformación de la energía solar en electricidad.

Estas instalaciones están compuestas por paneles que absorben el calor del sol. El proceso es sencillo; el colector, normalmente plano, transforma el calor en energía térmica, mediante el "efecto invernadero". El calor se almacena manteniendo la temperatura alta del agua que se utilizará cuando sea necesaria. Es importante que el tanque de almacenamiento tenga la capacidad suficiente para cubrir las necesidades de uno o dos días, que también dependerán del número de usuarios de la misma.

Estos sistemas tienen múltiples aplicaciones: la obtención de agua caliente sanitaria, climatización de piscinas, con lo cual podremos disfrutar de largos ba?os durante la mayor parte del a?o, calefacción, refrigeración, ya que para la obtención de frío es necesaria una fuente de calor, aplicaciones en la agricultura, como invernaderos o secaderos, y en la industria, como en plantas de desalinización, ya que no conllevan contaminación. El coste de la instalación completa necesaria para obtener agua caliente para tres o cuatro personas se encuentra a partir de unos 3.000 euros

Sistema fotovoltaico

Este mecanismo puede ser de dos tipos: aislado y conectado a la red. Los aislados están compuestos por generadores fotovoltaicos, que producen la energía a partir de la que reciben del Sol, y acumuladores que la almacenan hasta el momento de su utilización.

Es necesario en ambos sistemas que los rayos incidan perpendicularmente en los paneles. Así, al incidir en la superficie, producen el voltaje que se aprovechará.

Los conectados a la red están compuestos por:

Placas solares: al recibir los rayos, actúan como generador.

Regulador de carga: evita que se produzca una sobrecarga en los acumuladores.

Acumuladores, los proveedores de la energía que consumimos.

Inversor, que transforma la electricidad acumulada en corriente alterna, lista para consumirse.

Dos contadores: uno de ellos para contabilizar la energía que se aporta a la red y otro para medir nuestro propio consumo.

Ventajas de los sistemas solares

Una de las principales es que suponen un considerable ahorro en la factura de la luz. Además, los mecanismos fotovoltaicos necesitan sólo un mantenimiento básico al carecer de partes mecánicas. La única tarea necesaria es la limpieza de los paneles, que, además, resisten condiciones climáticas extremas. Asimismo, es posible aumentar la potencia a?adiendo paneles adicionales.

Aunque su precio puede resultar en principio algo elevado, y la instalación debe correr a cargo de profesionales, resulta una buena inversión a largo plazo. Además del ahorro que supone, incluso se obtiene beneficio de ello, ya que la energía que no consumamos se vende a las empresas de electricidad, que están obligadas a comprarla; desde éstas pasará a la red eléctrica general. Así, además de rentabilizar la instalación, colaboraremos en la extensión de una energía limpia e inagotable.
