ATP is also used in transport (i.e. active transport across a cell membrane)
The food we eat is digested into:
- Carbohydrates, such as glucose. Glucose is soluble in blood so it is converted to glycogen by the hormone Insulin secreted by the pancreas. Glycogen is insoluble so can be stored in the liver or muscles for later use.
- Fats and lipids. These flow in the lymphatic system and are mainly stored in the adipose tissue under the skin.
- Amino acids, which are used more for growth and repair rather than energy.
NOW....it is the OXIDATION of glucose and lipids that releases energy. This energy is used to convert ADP (adenosine diphosphate) to ATP (adenosine triphosphate) by the addition of an inorganic phosphate group to ADP.
This ATP is the 'energy currency'. It is how energy is stored. When needed in reactions, ATP changes back to ADP and inorganic phosphate to release ENERGY.
