Does this sound like a scam?

I posted an add on kijiji & somebody replied to me asking me to take a "person assistant" job with Adaptive Modules electronic company. I am supposed to send electronics to people and get paid for it. (Apparently while he's away in England.) I got a cheque in the mail for a lot of money. I read about cheque fraud & wire-transferring. Could it still be a scam even if the guy has not asked me to "wire transfer" (ie. Send him some of the money but keep the rest.) Would it still be bad to deposit the cheque?

Definitely a scam. The check is fake and you will get into trouble trying to cash or deposit it.

Also, have you been paid before having done anything to earn the money? That's a sure sign of a scam.

Another sure sign of a scam is that the "employer" is conveniently out of the country (probably sitting in a cybercafe in Nigeria).

If you're still wondering, why not call Adaptive Modules, which is apparently a real company, at their phone number: Phone:+44 1273 248977 and ask. If the job is real, they should be able to verify it.

NOBODY asks strangers to act as a middle man to receive and send packages unless they are doing something illegal. If it were legal they'd set up a corporate account with FedEx or Mail Boxes Etc who have trained bonded employees and the proper packing supplies, insurance, professional scales, customs forms, commercial invoice forms, etc

And turn that cheque over to the police. It's counterfeit and you will be arrested and owe the bank the full amount of the check when it comes back as fake in 2-3 weeks

The internet has not heard of that company name, which strongly suggests it's a fake name.

Still, if it seems too good to be true, he could be using you to insulate himself from the sale of stolen goods. Might use you for the short term and stick you with a counterfeit check.

Articles on Nigerian 419 scams would describe more variations.

Straight up scam, if it sounds to good to be true it is to good to be true. I've got a check like that before and you can get in trouble by trying to cash it
