One huge problem with saving is people set goals too high and expect them to achieve them. There is a popular internet challenge which will net you 1378 dollars in one year. The first week you save 1 dollar. The second week two dollars. Each week you save one extra dollar the last week of the year you should save 52 dollars.

Second, go over every bill you have. Shop for cheaper cell phone plans, car insurance, etc.
Third, try to figure out if there is a way to make more money. If you haven't had a raise in two years it may be time to look for a new job or approach your boss about a raise. Use websites like Salary.com to compare your salary to people in your industry. If you are below average and have experience that is a big red flag.

Half is way too much. You would never stick with it. Open a savings account and set up a standing order to pay an amount into it every payday. Small amounts add up and you won't miss it.
Sales!!! Look for good sales to save money. If its too expensive then dont buy it and if the store in general is too expensive or doesnt have any good and smart sales then go somewhere else
