Vinyl is much lower maitenance over time, wood is more "authentic" but needs to be dry, primed, and painted and needs to be repainted every 8-10 years. I would look at homes in the neighborhood, like I wouldn't do vinyl on a historic home, where all the other homes are brick, wood, or stucco. But if its a modest home and others in the hood have vinyl I'd go for it.
