Is this a false ceiling?

No, it is not a false ceiling. The ceiling plaster sheets will be fixed to battens, and the edges of the coving are fixed to the same battens. So when there is excessive movement in the house timbers, any cracks that occur in the ceiling will naturally follow into the coving. This is not unusual in old houses.

justme is correct. Except that the ceiling is almost certainly lath and plaster not board. That kind of cracking is common in older property. Lightweight filler works best for repairs.

Hello,

There are some cracks in my passage ceiling that run from the ceiling across the coving which leads me to believe that it is a false ceiling and the coving is a part of it (see attached image). Can anyone shed some light on this for me because if it is false, I'll be ripping it down.

Thanks
