But you are missing the main point of GMO foods, it isn't whether or not it's healthier though there are significant unknown risks that are just passed over by the regulatory bodies but it's the control of our food. GMO's seeds are leased out for the year, a farmer is not allowed to save any seed for next year but must pay for the seed again. Also as nature does not respect the boundaries of property, the GMO'd genes spread to neighboring fields and the GMO companies will sue adjacent formers for stealing the proprietary GMO DNA blown to their fields by the wind. This requires that other farmers must destroy their personal seeds which had been collected over generations and had evolved to the local climate and purchase their seeds from a commercial vendor which over the years have all been purchased by the GMO companies.
Just deferring public interest to GMO free produce isn't enough. Co-operatives must be formed to produce non-GMO seed in controlled greenhouses and to isolate seeds without GMO DNA either through dilution in controlled environments or by DNA testing so none GMO'd seed can be filtered from local stock and hence adapt to local conditions. The data from the dilution process should be used in civil lawsuits against the GMO companies as a measure of the cost they unlawfully impose to those who choose not to be their clients.
GMO means genetically modified organism and has nothing to do with hormones in food. I would not try to get the farmers to discount their prices for your cause. Especially since some will likely selling GMO sweet corn and may be doing GMO crops in addition to their produce. But if you want to do this talk to the market manager and not the individual vendors as the MM runs the market and is the person that okays such events.
But first you need to be clear about this issue. GMO has nothing to do with hormones in meat (no synthetics hormones in produce). GMO's are about genetically modified crops that many people do not think are safe to eat and/or should be labeled
I like what you are going after. It sounds great.
I do have a question, thought. Are you really speaking of Growth Modified Organisms or Genetically Modified Organisms? I am not trying to put you down but I have not heard the term GMO used for growth modifying organisms. I can see how it can be used that way since Monsanto, and others of that ilk, claim that GMO foods will be larger and more nutritious despite the fact that evidence shows that those claims are not true.
Since Monsanto and its bed mates (DuPont, Dow...) refuse to allow their seeds to be tested by independent 3rd party labs to verify the safety and effectiveness of their product, the only testing we can actually do is on animals feed GMO product and test actual GMO product too.
In a 2012 study between GMO corn and non-GMO corn, they were testing for nutrients and chemicals in both products this is some of what they found:
GMO Corn has 14 Parts-per-million (ppm) of Calcium and NON GMO corn has 6130 ppm. 437 X more.
GMO corn has 2 ppm of Magnesium and NON GMO corn has 113ppm. 56 X more.
GMO corn has 2 ppm of Manganese and NON GMO corn has 14ppm. 7X more.
GMO corn also contained many harmful elements which were not present in non-GMO corn. Here are the actual results: http://cdn.naturalsociety.com/wp-content...
I wish you all the best!
Sounds like you have it all together. Good luck to you and all, from Raymond, Wa. Global Command.
this said good just like it is
couldnt be assed reading it so i say, "yeah thats great"
Hi there,
I had an idea for the Apprentice Ecologist initiative, and would like to run it by you to see if it fits proper criteria! This year a rally/march organized by a local branch of the Anonymous Eastern WA group, they focus on general issues in society but the theme in March is on Growth Modified Organisms (GMO's) in our food. This is being held in the downtown area of Spokane on March 17th 2014. The city I live in, Spokane, Washington has in the last fourteen years developed a good-sized farmers market in downtown Spokane, the opening of which is May 10th 2014 this year. I thought it would be a good idea to get ahold of the farmers/vendors in the who will being selling their goods that day, and work out some possible coupon/discount ideas for the people who attend a second anti-GMO/GFO rally help on the same day downtown that I will have helped organize. I could handout these coupons for organic alternatives at the march while making people aware of the negative affects on our bodies an our environment. Along with the help of the Anonymous Eastern WA group to get the message out and increase the number of people who will be attending the second rally via social sites, anonymous website, fliers, etc… The overall benefit of the coupons would give people initiative to join the rally and if anything be apart of the fight against growth hormones in the food we eat. The incentive for the business owners and vendors would be increased awareness and sales of alternative healthier foods. I see it as a win-win situation for both parties. Thank you for taking the time to read this message! Please let me know if you think this would be a plausible idea or possibly any alterations in my plan. Thanks again.
