It's a cool and creative idea, but probably not. The promoters have failed to addressed the folks who have questioned the technical aspects such as maintenance under heavy truck traffic or utility corridors that share the right of way, ice and frost heave, shadowing from road debris and vehicles. There is also a huge issue of the funding to change over such massive infrastructure, and if society were to make such an investment, wouldn't it be more prudent to do so with far more efficient and effective infrastructure such as rooftops?
It would be better just to use all of those solar panels in the desserts.. I mean not all roads would be able to get the sunlight it needs anyway so there could be many malfunctions with them. And I hope they won't be coming in the next century because they are too futuristic to me xD. I don't want to drive my truck on them things every single day, it would just seem wierd..
No, the concept is naive. The material costs would have to be low, less than that of asphalt as it would need to be added to existing streets, on the scale of paint. Roads run for miles and are on the ground, conductors to carry the electricity for those miles would be expensive and the proximity to the ground ensures high losses.
With all the roofs that could have solar panels but don't yet, I think it is premature to start making solar roads.
Yeah we can expect something good in future :)
I really hope so. It sounds like it has lots of potential.
