Wind turbines are operated only as long as they generate tax advantages and are then shut down. In addition, California wind turbines are often called "Condor Cuisinarts" due to the number of condors that are killed by running into the slow moving blades.
Solar panels require a land area twice the size of any town that they service. If they supply power to a city, that land use really goes up. They also do not work at night or in bad weather.
Nuclear is an alternative energy source in that it converts other elements into nuclear fuel for further use. Uranium - 238 becomes plutonium 239, a wonderful fuel. Thorium - 232 becomes Uranium - 233, another great fuel. If we recycle the "spent" nuclear fuel, we regain the usable isotopes and reduce the required storage time from 240,000 years to 500 years. President Jimmy Carter stopped all efforts to recycle "spent" nuclear fuel. Other countries (Britain, France, and Russia still recycle for the obvious advantages that are obtained.)
Many experts fell that we should use more alternative energy sources, such as wind turbines and solar panels etc, rather than using coal oil gas and nuclear because they want to shut down their competition. It's not necessarily better to use alternative sources, in every situation, however.
