The problems we face today are because the people who work for a living are outnumbered by those who vote for a living.
A democracy will continue to exist up until
the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous
gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority
always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from
the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally
collapse over loose fiscal policy
A broken government can't be fixed by the same government that broke it.

It is not just the Liberals against the shutdown, because some Conservatives are against it to even through not as many as Democrats. Conservatives prefer less government and social programs and Democrats prefer the opposite. But not all Democrats and Conservatives vote with their parties, i.e. Moderate Conservatives and Conservative Democrats.
Sensible people, whether primarily liberal or primarily conservative, are against the shutdown. It is only the political extremists who embrace it.
Because it's costing the country millions of dollars, several services provided by the government are shut down, and the politicians can't just sit down, shut up, and play nice, goddamit.
