I had an event similar. Took one of those "Try it free for a month" deals, but I should have seen the red flags immediately, but alas, brain fart, and I missed it. So I called the bank (PNC)and advised I lost my card. They "immediately" canceled the card. Feeling secure I did nothing more. When my statement was available Don't ya know the scammers had made withdrawals even though the card was canceled! So I called PNC back and explained it. They were not shocked "They find ways of getting your account number then they can bypass the card". Anyway, in my case, they were very helpful. They did something to my checking account that this scammer was, for lack of a better word "Blacked Out". I did have to fill out some forms, but bottom line, I got my $$$ back.
Needless to say, contact your bank and advise these are unauthorized withdrawals and let them take care of it. So the answer is scammers CAN get account numbers so we, as customers, need to be vigilant also.
You need to contact your bank and cancel the direct debit from your account, since you are the only one who is allowed to do this. You will have to go in person because they will need to see ID. Ask the bank if there is anything they can do about the previous unauthorized debits. In the future, remember to contact your bank immediately if you want direct debits cancelled.
If you cancelled in writing according to the T&Cs, then you dispute each and every charge with your bank.
You can't get any money refunded from before you cancelled.
call the bank and put a block on it say you did not authorize automatic payments
