I am assuming that he both smells and sees the smoke in the air. Your mother is protecting you from him coming in there and kicking your butt. If I were you I would bring home flowers to your mother. Just because we as parents don't say anything that does not mean we are stupid. we are just choosing our battles.

If he can't smell it, it's probably because either him or your mom do it regularly. I don't care what he tells you.
My dad can't smell weed, even if I smoke it in the room next to him and he walks in, he still doesn't smell it. Thing is, he is totally against it. He has been around marijuana smokers too, considering my mom was a stoner back in the day, she quit. Just weird he can't smell the smell of the smelliest smell around.
