I think it depends on the state &/or province. In my community all the houses are licensed with two garbage bins, one for regular trash & the other for recycling. If you aren't using the recycling bin "properly" you can get a ticket. But its not like they do a thorough investigation in every trash bin, they just tell the garbage people to check it & inform them of any resident mixing the recycling with non-recyclable garbage (some are lazy though). It's an alright system i guess, most of my neighbors don't have much problem with it. But there is one house that just doesn't care & gets ticketed very often. (suburban gossip)
Oh & most schools are pretty big on recycling too.
Although, unfortunately ,I think most people wouldn't do it if they weren't forced or felt like they had to.

Not many American's recycle. I live in America and I recycle.
Not a lot
My class was having a debate about it after my teacher made a comment about America not recycling. I'm curious now as I always presumed that America were big on recycling like the UK but now I'm not sure.
Also just to let you know that I'm not hating, I love America.
