So I got halfway scammed on Craigslist. I posted something up for 700$, two days later I get a text from a text now number saying "hey do you have that for sale still, I want it and I'll pay 50$ for you to take it down today" so I do and he said that he will send a check and when it clears he will send someone over to pick it up because he lives in a different state and he owned a moving company. (I read up and this is a common scam didn't know at the time) close to a month later I get a check for 2,000$ I ask about it and he he said "ya some of that is for the moving company to take it and ship it" he was also very desperate wanting me to deposit it. I do and I pulled 100$ because I get a direct deposit in two days that would cover it even if the check doesn't clear. Then my bank calls to say there is a 90% chance the check is fake, then puts a hold on my account and hold the check so my account is overdrawn but I still have direct deposit to cover what I overdrafted. But I looked and the over drawn money never came up and a few days later (today) I see a deposit went threw for 1960$ (not 2000$ doesn't show 2000 anywhere) I knew two days ago it was a scam but why did the check go threw my bank even knew it was a scam. The person who sent it won't reply and I think he knew his scam failed. What's going on now, why do I have this money in my account, and what do I do now I'm afraid to call my bank because I think I can get in trouble for having it.
Yea sounds like a common Nigerian 419 scam, where you deposit a counterfeit check and send some of the bank advance to the so called shipping company which is actually the scam artists payoff. Guess who the authorities go after for fraud.
Just five gangs in Nigeria are behind most Craigslist buyer scams
http://www.itworld.com/article/2694403/s... If the check does come back as a scam, have you asked the bank if there are going to be any charges for it? The scammer may have the last laugh yet if you get hit with a charge for an invalid check.
< but why did the check go threw my bank even knew it was a scam >
They said it was a 30% chance, not 100%. You deposited it, it's not their job to baby sit your account.
Sounds like you came out on top. Congrats!
Talk to your bank about it. You shouldn't get in trouble if you explain the situation. Just be sure to keep the exact amount set aside in case they decide to take it back. You don't want them overdraw your account.
the bank will reverse the deposit soon enough. do NOT withdraw or spend the money.
