Sure. There are businesses that do just that. You can't do it economically on a small scale though. It's best to just sell your cans to a scrap yard (be sure to call several places for quotes and check the weight before you deliver them). They will, in turn, sell them to the smelters.
Melting them down would probably cost more then they are worth. Just crush them so that they don't take up so much space and then take them to a local metal recycler and sell them.
You will be better off taking them to a recycler than trying to melt them down yourself.
Just take it to a recycler, while it's doable, it does require a huge volume.
Of course, if you want to do it yourself, that would be OK too (probably):
