Solar power can be, and is, used in urban areas by roof mounting the panels so they are not shaded.

Even in rural areas, many are roof or post/pole/stand mounted so as NOT to take up ground space used for crops/grazing.

I think it is PART of the solution, but prices for panels are still fairly high.

I think every building in the world that has electricity service wired up and a roof not shaded by trees or other buildings should have solar panels. That way more of the power used in the building is generated at the same place where it is used, which would allow a less expensive lower capacity power grid to meet the demand. And at the rate solar panel prices are dropping and installations are increasing, we could see that become a reality in only 10 or 15 years.

Solar Energy can be used in both Urban and rural areas. In Urban areas, it can be used as an additional source of power through Rooftop Mounting Systems and Solar water heating systems. This reduces your current bill greatly and provides you backup during power shortages.

In rural areas, Rooftop systems and water heating systems can be implemented to provide backup and to reduce the current bill. In addition to this the farmers can become solar farmers and sell solar electricity to the Govt. The Return Of Investment will be in around 5-6 years. This requires high capital though. But the returns are higher. Since Rural ares have more open space and sunlight, it is more suited to Solar power generation.
