HORIZONTAL stripes in the chest area will draw the eyes outwards, which will give the illusion of a wider chest. Avoid horizontal stripes in general for your body for areas you do not want to be widened. VERTICAL stripes in general lengthen the body upwards; the look good if you're aiming to look leaner, taller, skinnier, etc.
