What is the size of the notch under walls that carpets go into?

I know that when WE did sheetrock, we placed a piece of sheetrock on the subfloor to set the bottom piece on. We did this so that ANY future water on the floor does not immediately begin to soak up into the sheetrock.

Carpet usually installed right on the subfloor unless there is underlay for padding. There MAY be a strip with upright tacks in it to keep carpet from pulling out from under the baseboards trim prematurely. This is done BEFORE finish trims so baseboards are installed right down onto the carpet. This is the only "notch" or space I am aware of. If you remove carpet, you will still have the 1/2" space below the sheetrock, the thickness of whatever carpet was in there and underlay and then the bottom of the baseboard trim. You can see how this will vary depending on what was installed. Draw it out on paper and you can see what the space would be.

What Jim says. The wall...drywall or plaster..goes down to the floor. A baseboard....the trim at the bottom of the wall either goes over new carpet when it is first installed, but almost always the baseboard gos on first and the carpet is laid to but up to the trim.

Under the carpet all around the edges of the room, nailed to the floor, is a thin strip of wood with REALLY SHARP teeth sticking up into the bottom of the carpet. Be really careful. You can mess up your hand in a heartbeat pressing against one.

There is no notch. The carpet is installed and the bottom trim is installed over it. Thick carpet leaves more clearance than a thin one.

I'm building something and I want to size it with a regular size. How big is that notch under the lining under the wall that carpet fits into when it's installed? What's that notch called anyway?
