Should I have my own bathroom or a walk-in-closet?

Posted at: 2014-09-26
My family and I plan to move into a new house and my new bedroom has a extra room in it and I don't know if I should turn that room into my own bathroom or a walk-in-closet?:)

Oh, heck, honey--it's already plumbed? Go for the bathroom! You can get dressed anywhere in your room (or your new bathroom!). One caveat, though--what kind of clothing storage will you have, if you choose to have the bathroom over the closet? Is there enough space in your room for a wardrobe that will accommodate the clothing you need to hang, or that can't go into a dresser? How big is the bathroom space? Any possibility of walling off enough space for a closet, and having a smaller bathroom?

you can always dress in your bedroom or buy a 'wardrobe' to add places to put clothes 'in' but you can't just add a toilet in your room ...and if you ever have ppl over to spend the night (friends or guys, IDK how old you are) it's nice to have a bathroom IN your room for privacy :) I'd for sure go with a bathroom :)

EDITED: I'm under the assumption that you are in control of what you want (not a kid with a wish) and I'm under the assumption that it is even POSSIBLE to put plumbing in that area. But there ARE lots of factors of IF it can be plumbed right to be a bathroom. And of COURSE it's cheaper to be a closet.. but I'd assume you knew that and would hope that you have the money saved ahead of time to even consider making it a bathroom before you ask for others opinions. I'd still say make it a bathroom if you CAN, and have the money.

The first thing to decide is how much closet space do you really need and how much are you prepared to spend to create a bathroom from scratch. A bathroom will add value to the house, but removing a bedroom ( assuming that is what the extra room is ) reduces the value.

You could convert a room to a walk in closet for a couple of hundred dollars or less. To change it into a bathroom would cost between $5,000 and $20,000. It might even be impossible depending on the structure of the house. This is a decision only your parents can make, not you.

You need to find out IF you can run plumbing to that room. It might not be possible.

Then get an estimate, and see if it is really worth it. You could make it a study, game room, or storage. It is probably designed as a closet / dressing area.

Bathroom, having your own bathroom would be far better.

a bathroom requires plumbing to be added, sink, toilet, tub/shower-if its not right next to another room with plumbing its really expensive to add

a closet just requires some shelves & rods to hang clothes
