If You have someone who is handy with tools ask Them to make You a frame. All I would use is a few 2by 4s and a few 2by 6s and 2 sheets of 1/2 " plywood. You can build it to any height You desire and to a size that accommodates the Mattresses. . Look in any good second Hand Store for a suitable Headboard and You should have the perfect bed. If You make it into two or three sections it will be easy to move if You ever decide to find another home. Simply bolt them together when You require. Would do it My Self if I knew where You lived.

I agree that your best bet is to have a frame custom-made for you and your husband. Now, where I am there is a store that sells Amish furniture. The samples that are displayed in front of the store look very sturdy, so you might start looking at that.
