Ideas on what we can convert our barn into? (More info below.)?

Do a search on "barn weddings". Apparently this is a booming business around the country with people lining up to rent converted barns for the receptions for outdoor or country themed weddings. You do have to check zoning ordinances and bring the barn up to local building codes for safety, sanitation and handicap access. I saw an article where a Midwestern farmer spent almost $300,000 to turn his barn into a wedding venue. But since he gets $4,800 per wedding and has booked an average of 30 per year, he earned that expense back in his first 2 years of operation and is now clearing over $100,000 a year.

Do you have room to put in a driveway? That would take care of the zoning problem and rental is your best bet. You could also rent it out as a stable to someone looking to house their horses. Renting for storage would require a decent burglar alarm system. Before you would remodel for an art studio or gallery ask around and see if anyone would be willing to use it for that purpose.

One last thought, where I am you can get fabulous money for old lumber used in barns, you might want to look into that and build a smaller more useful barn or garage with the proceeds

A studio. You can show local artist's work and sell them while taking a percentage.

rent it to local square dance groups, they love barn dances

Meth lab

We have bought a new house which has a large barn out the back...originally stables.

We would like to convert it into something to bring in money!

Our first idea was to convert it into an apartment to rent out, however, the council have said that as it is behind the house it is not allowed to made into a living space... (as apparently all living spaces, by law, have to be within easy reach of an ambulance.)

We are lost for what to do with it to generate money. My ideas so far are as follows:

- Storage rooms for rent.

- Convert into large open area with big windows and rent for an art room/office room, or put up for hire if anybody would like to use it for teaching classes?

- Create an environment for an animal to take care of and breed... (However I fear that looking after the animal may cost more than we get from the breeding and selling.)

If anybody has ever had to do something similar or has any ideas then that would be great.

Thank you in advance for any input. =)
