Why is my bank hiding my money from me?

Posted at: 2015-05-24
I am 16 years old and I have a basic checking account along with a debit card. On Saturday I deposited $39 dollars to the ATM and on the receipt it said that my total amount in the account was $61. Cool. A few days later on Wednesday (today), I have $25 left with all the purchases I've made since then. The problem comes when after added up how much money I have spent, I should have $16 left. I check my account history and it says that I apparently had $71 in my account when I deposited, NOT $61 like the receipt said. So why did my bank hide this 10 dollars from me? Because even after I deposited that $39, when I checked online it said I had $61. It was only until Io cheked my account activity that it said I had 71 when I made the deposit. Sorry if this is confusing, but if any of you understand what I'm saying, please help!

Did you have a ten dollar credit come in? Remember that things done on Saturday are all on Monday's business day. So if you had some refund or something that was pending it may have come in at a later time, but still appeared on the same day. So you had 61 when you checked it on Saturday and then on Monday a 10 dollar credit came in. Then you check it on Wednesday and it shows 71 for the whole day because it is all considered the same day in banking.

You really shouldn't rely on ATM receipts for balances. They are horribly unreliable and it's a lousy way to keep track of how much money you have in your account.

Go into the bank's website and look at your account there to get a more reliable balance.

It's much easier to just call your bank.

They like to confuse you, and see if you really did learn anything in algebra class - LIKE KEEP A PAPER CHECK REGISTER LOG !!
