A power inverter is an electric power converter that changes DC (Direct Current) to AC (Alternating Current).
A solar inverter, generally is grid tied and can synchronously transfer the energy from the grid. A solar inverter can basically feed into the electrical grid and has functions to attach to various photovoltaic arrays. Solar Inverters have MPPT or PWM technology that allow the batteries to be charged at a constant level. Solar inverters also have islanding protection, which basically means to prevent automatic re-connection.
A regular inverter or a UPS will basically have a battery to store energy from the grid when the supply is available. When the grid is cut off, it will basically switch to power from the energy stored in the battery.
Sun light varies throughout the day. That basically means that sometimes during a day there will be more power generation and other times, it would be lesser. Let’s say a cloud comes up then sudden

And this is the basic function of any inverter: be it solar or regular inverter. A home UPS or home inverter take the DC power from the batteries and convert it to AC power used by appliances. A solar inverter also does the same if it is an “Off Grid” solar power system. In case of “Grid Connected” the DC power is from the solar panels and AC power is given to the grid.
An off grid solar powered system has an assembly of solar panels, charge controller, batteries and inverter as shown in the image below. The batteries are charged using solar panels and the inverter has the same function of converting DC to AC. It can also have an automated switch to sense if grid is not supplying power that can change the power source of the connected home from grid to batteries. Depending on the need the system can be designed to: 1) To completely rely on solar power 2) Charge the batteries from solar power when sun is available and from the grid when it is not.An existing home UPS or Inverter system can be converted to be used with an off grid powered system by just adding a switch which can control the change source: solar or grid (based on availability).
An inverter creates AC power from DC power through the use of transistor switches. A grid tied inverter create the AC but only if there is already AC power on the output and it matches the frequency of the AC power it finds on the output therefore allowing you to plug into the grid.
A solar inverter is probably an inverter targeted to match typical out puts from PV panels, so as to provide workable voltages for battery charging or grid in-feed.
I should imagine that there are great variety of inverters out there for welding examples that have input outputs that are far different to those required for the above application.
I want to know the difference between applications, usage, backup & price too.......
