Should my boyfriend file bankruptcy?

Posted at: 2015-05-24
He owes about $30k to credit cards. He's about to lose his job. He has made payments on time for the past 15 years. He doesn't own a house - we live in his parents basement. His truck is 16 years old so it's not worth much. The most expensive thing he owns is a $300 computer. He's a type 1 diabetic and cannot afford insurance because he's sending all his money to his credit cards. Should he try to file bankruptcy or should he try consolidation or is there something else to try?

Well, lucky for him, when he loses his job, Uncle Obummer will find him some free insurance.

^^ True, but more seriously, the Type 1 diabetes must really take a toll on his mental health. {I am Type 2 - so I do not need such strict control over everything.}

Still, $30,000 is a heck of a lot of money. Where did it go? {Not to rent, or truck payments. You did not mention student loans. Is he supporting you and / or kids? < sorry, but that is a fair question given the circumstances. Is he a drug user? Gambler?}

The "best" would be if his parents can help him. {But they should have done a money intervention years ago.} $30,000 debt x 20% interest = $6000 a year WASTED. {= $500 a month !!! just for interest payments.}

It was his choice to use a credit card rather then pay by cash. Expect little sympathy from the court or the people he owes. Take away those cards & cut them up. Avoid bankruptcy at any cost. He needs to see a financial planner to work this out. That is the only way to solve this. Wonder "why" he let that debt build up. Why didn't he fix it when it was only $10k or 15k? Urge him to talk to a pro on this.

P.S. No marriage until the problem is resolved.

Bankruptcy might be the best option. It'll totally run his credit for awhile, but might be the only way o dig out of this.

I do. Oh sorry wrong thing

yes he should
