1. Plant cells have a cell wall made of cellulose (peptidoglycan in prokaryotes.) This re-inforce the cell and prevents its plasmolysis in hypotonic environement. Infact, Hydraulic turgor pressure creates this rigidity, along with the wall structure. The flexibility of the cell walls is seen when plants wilt, so that the stems and leaves begin to droop, or in seaweeds that bend in water currents. An animal cell has no cell wall and burst when imersed in hypotonic solution.
2. Plants have a central vacoule, called a tonoplast, which also helps mantain turgor, controls movement of molecules between the cytosol and sap, stores useful material and digests waste proteins and organelles.
3. Cell communication between plant occurs through so called "plasmodesmata," these are microscopic channels linking cells. These occur in the form of "gap junctions" in animal cells. They are simular but not identicle.
4. Plants cells contain organelles collectively known as plastids, notably the chloroplasts which contain chlorophyll and the biochemical systems for light harvesting and photosynthesis, but also amyloplasts specialized for starch storage, elaioplasts specialized for fat storage and chromoplasts specialized for synthesis and storage of pigments
5. Plant cells are stationary, animal cells are not
6. Animal cells have so called centrioles which orients the microtuble spindle formation during mitosis. This orients the direction of cell division. Plant cells have no such organelles.
7. Cytokinesis in plant cells occurs via. cell wall formation between the two daughter cells following telophase. This is accomplished by the formation of cellulose on the endoplasmic reticulum and is deposited along th so called "cell plate" during cytokinesis. The process ocurrs via cleavage furrow in animal cells were a contractile ring composed of actin and myosin form and this "pinches" the two cells appart. This contractile machinery also opperates in muscle tissue.
8. Most, but not all plant cell sperm lack the flagella that is normally present on animal spermatoyctes.
