Insurance is something all adults should have in our current private health care system. We dont raise taxes to pay for a national health service but you have to pay when you get sick and too many people dont pay and the hospitals have to get money from the government or taxpayers anyway. It is cheaper t subsidize people to buy insurance in the private realm rather than let them go without insurance and health care.
You dont have to buy it if you belong to an exempt group, you can escape the tax penalty if you are in certain groups. You can be insured by a parent or spouse or employer. It is duty of the federal government to find a way to protect all citizens from suffering due to no insurance. It is personal yet it does affect our whole country. When you file medical bankruptcy to avoid paying your bills you have a credit problem and cant get a job and then you go on welfare, so you end up on government assistance. This way you get a subsidy to help you at the beginning and dont have to have problems.
It'd be a lot better for Americans if you ALL paid a bit, rather than losing your homes each time one of you needs something. I'm Canadian, yes I pay more taxes but when my kid broke his wrist he was checked for concussion, X-rayed and had 3 different casts put on at different stages, more Xrays and a followup check 6 weeks later - for not a cent from me.
We lost a family member to cancer a couple of years back; chemo, meds, in and out of hospital, but it didn't leave his widow broke and homeless AS WELL.
You pay for the police, for teachers, and for road repairs whether you want to or not. Even if you go to a private school, you still pay taxes for public schools.

I feel forced to buy auto insurance, property insurance and flood insurance. If I dont buy car insurance my license will be suspended, if I dont' buy flood and property insurance , a lein would be put on my property.
The first answerer does not seem to understand. Auto insurance and such are not things you are forced to purchase, we all have a choice about whether to drive or not, we do not have a choice to breathe and we are being forced to buy it simply for breathing and existing.
Yes, you can not care about your health, but the problem is, when you do get sick or injured, the rest of us have to pay for you, and we don't want to. We want you to be responsible for yourself.

Please explain to me how they can FORCE people to buy health insurance. I understand the importance of things like car insurance. Since driving is a privilege not a right. But now Obama is trying to say if you want to even breathe you HAVE to buy insurance. Is it not my God given right as an American to not care about my health.
