The water tends to erode the plastic casing after a while... Might have a bad taste from it.
Also probably not safe leave it around in heat...
The concern was with Bisphenol A ( BPA ). It's a chemical used in the manufacture of plastics and resins and the problem was that it's similar to estrogen and other hormones so young girls were developing at an early age and young boys were being feminized. There were also numerous other health hazards. Of course public attention and regulations are now such that BPA isn't in our bottles anymore but there are a lot of other chemicals that we do not know the effects of yet. The chemicals all leech out into the water especially if kept in a hot car.
The more you learn about bottled water, especially the privatization of water, the better tap water becomes. Just filter tap water with a Brita and put it in stainless steel water bottles.
The industry is self regulated, meaning that the producers of the water insure its quality. Certainly you would be very unlikely to have any negative effects from drinking bottled water. However, every study done to date comparing municipal water to that of bottled water have found that tap water is consistently cleaner, tested more often, and has to meet a higher standard.
From an environmental standpoint, bottled water is plain awful. It takes three times the amount of water a bottle can hold just to make the bottle, and many of the bottles are never recycled.
Drink tap water.
Edit:
You can find the answer to your question by googling "bottled water study." The first result is an article that summarizes the issues quite well:

Try that.
Good question. You just helped me out because I just started carrying around a 15 year old plastic water bottle and drinking out of it thinking that I was all smart because I found a good way to stay hydrated. So now that you reminded me, you can buy certain bottles that are chemical free and don't have any toxins leaking into your water (at least they say).
Well it would contain the plastic of the bottle. So not great..
Did you have any bad experience, if you did then let me know so I could avoid a certain brand.
I'm not talking about the bottle I'm talking about the water. Any answers?
