How can I downsize for retirement?

I started with getting rid of my excess stuff. I gave away much that I had including some furniture and most of my clothing and household stuff I wasn't using. Then fixed up the house so when I am ready it will be easier to sell and move. Down sizing is really hard, I helped mom go from a house she was in for 35 years to 4 rooms in my brother's house she had to get rid of things she had for almost 80 years.

My plan is to first buy a house with a smaller garage and get rid of excess vehicles and boats. Then in another 10 years down size to a condo with only one car and minor amounts of furniture and clothing.

Start with not buying anything while tossing stuff as you find you don't need or want it. When something breaks consider not replacing it, wait a few weeks and you might find you don't need it.

Walk around the place. Consider selling/tossing/giving away anything you have not used in 5 years. Try to put all the important paperwork in 1 place, as you will need that. Once you know where you are going, then start thinking about what to keep. Since if your moving 1 block away or across the county, what to keep depends on where you go. Concentrate on the practical Take it 1 step at a time.

Sort through stuff you don't use or have not used for years and give it to a resale charity shop or have a rummage sale to make a little money off them.

Save every penny you can.

Go through things you don't want and donate to Goodwill, other thrift stores or have a yard sale.

Sell your house and buy a Winnebago.

Sell everything you have
