Having a bank account?

Posted at: 2015-05-24
I know a girl who has multiple cards. It's I'm not exaggerating when I say it. Just yesterday this person was going to pay for something and new card from new bank. Is it good to have multiple bank accounts? This person said that they prefer to deposit their money in different accounts. Is it good? Or bad? Please explain.

Actually a good idea. If the account gets very large, you may not be adequately insured by FDIC. So multiple accounts would solve that problem. Don't put all your eggs in one basket, so to speak.

Not so much a problem now, but in the Great Depression, banks failed. It's not entirely unheard of today.

Advantages: you're more likely to find an ATM when you need cash if you can use multiple banks, or you can use one bank with ATMs everywhere and another with a high interest rate.

Disadvantage: keeping track, not letting any account get empty.

Security-wise it doesn't matter unless you're rich, because savings accounts are automatically insured.

To each their own

I have accounts with 2 credit unions and 1 bank

I also have multiple CCs that have nothing to do with my banks

It's neither good nor bad, just how some people manage their money. Personally I just get confused with more than 2 accounts.

It's unlikely she has multiple bank accounts. She probably has multiple credit cards. I don't see the benefit of having more than one.
