Cans can be flattened easily---lay the can on its side and crease the middle. Then gently push each end (now slanting) in the direction it is slanting.
To crush it, simply pinch the sides part way the same on each side with the thumb and forefinger inward about two thirds of the way down (like 3 and 9 on a clock), and do the same one third of the way down (at 12 and 6) an orientation perpendicular to the other action. Then just easily step on it until it compacts. (Use old shoes when doing either, because aluminum cans are rigid at the rim and base and can really tear up the soles of good expensive shoes, especially leather soled shoes.)
Be careful with aluminum cans. Handle each one as little as possible. Torn, they are very sharp and can cut a person very badly. The benefit with crushing or flattening is that you do not cut the can, and thus there is less chance that it will cut you.
Yes tree chipper to shred aluminum cans with powerhorse 208cc 3"chipper/shredder from northern tool .com
Don't use a tree chipper to shred aluminum cans!. Use the appropriate tool for the job!
Yes, but it won't last long. Suggest he spring for a hammer-mill.
I heard of one person who inadvertently put a can of beer through a chipper that was being used to prepare material for composting. The beer composted nicely. The can did not.
Aluminum cans, yes
Can, yes; SHOULD, no.
The blades are NOT designed to handle metal.
Crushing is easy, a roll mill will do the job nicely and can be MADE easily with a little welding and mechanical ability; OR, he can get a rock crusher.
