Why does my leather bag sweat?

I have a brown tanned leather satchel that was given as a gift. It was wrapped in paper and the leather had made the paper greasy and when I unravelled it the leather seemed greasy too. I was told by the person who gave me the gift that the grease only appears when it's in contact with paper, and surely enough when I left it for a few hours it dried up and seemed like normal leather. However whenever it is in contact with paper for more than a few minutes it slowly starts to secrete oil/grease. The bag is from Greece and I am told the leather is treated in pigeon excrement and goat urine (nice!). However this might just be my friend joking (I can never tell with him).I have a brown tanned leather satchel that was given as a gift.
