Originally ties were simple scarves that kept the neck warm. Over time they became purely decorative

It's a holdover from when it was needed to keep the shirt closed on top for warmth. Nowadays, it is more of a social statement than anything else.

It used to be to close the shirt at the collar backi before shirts had buttons. Now they are mostly decorative.
