The shop where you get it done will usually have earrings you can choose from. Check their website or call in advance to make sure. You can play right after getting it done.While you're playing you might want to put a band-aid over it until it heals and you can take it out though. Getting your earring caught on something or ripped out of your ear is NOT a pleasant experience. - Brenna
