While you are at the home improvement store, talk to the people that work there and explain what you are wanting to do, give the basic size of the cupboard and your best guess as to how much weight it would need to hold in hanging clothes. Do not get out of the store without the end cap things for the pole: you attach them to the inside of the cupboard and the pole drops into them.

At almost any big-box hardware/home improvement store such as Home Depot or Lowe's. Or any place that sells lumber and home furnishings. You can also use a metal pipe, or if your closet is large enough, a garment rack that is free-standing.
