in case you're wondering i live in skandia trying to grow my own backyard hawaii.

Coconuts are not grown in a freezing climate. They must be protected if they get below 35 degrees F. It is doubtful you will be able to keep a coconut tree producing when it is colder than normal and that is likely 80s-90sF. Anything cooler than that and you will not set fruit.

Is that Skandia Michigan? Then you must grow them indoors in a hothouse environment. Since that is not economical on any scale you should simply purchase them. There is a reason they grow only in tropical climates. Michigan isn't on the list. Climate change/global warming will really need to kick, maybe in 1000 more years. So be patient and you will be able to grow them.
