Possible Black Mould in Apartment?

Instead of the landlord doing something about the carpet, he covered it. You can try talking to him. If you call the Health Department, he more than likely will find a reason for you to move.

Then he might wash the mold off.

If possible, you could pay someone a small amount to wash the mold off.

Humid weather and Moisture, usually from hot showers and baths makes moisture in the other rooms. After showers, the moisture needs to be wiped off. Using fans to circulate the air and leaving the br door open will help. Opening up the bathroom window will help.

Vinegar and water will take the mold off the windows and keeping them dry after that will stop it from growing.

We live in humid weather too. We wipe the moisture off things and leave a door open and use fans to help with the moisture.

The black mold in bedroom and bathroom can be treated with bleach in hot water solution as the bleach will kill the spores in the mold or you can buy some antifungal spray from a diy store or supermarket to spray onto the area which has the same effect. After cleaning all traces of the mold away the ceilings should be painted with some antifunfal paint as a tenant you are responsable for decorations. The mold grows due to condensation and dampness and lack of ventilation and rooms not being properly heated. Regarding the laminate flooring possably laid onto a carpet if this is correct its not been properly installed and there may be dust from the carpet underneath, you need to check with the landlord if he considers this as a fixture. If you want to lift the flooring and lay your own carpets you may have to restore the laminate floors at your own cost when you leave. Laminate flooring laid onto cocrete or timber floors are very popular in uk as a good alternative to carpets.

This is pretty common ,the main cause is moisture in the air so if you buy a de-humidifier that would help absorb the moisture in the air! also just try and keep your windows open and that should stop more mould from growing, as for the floor board situation i'm not sure what you can do ,obviously it will make it more musty, and isn't an ideal living space for people with allergies but I would contact the landlord first and see what he can do about it?!

My boyfriend and I recently moved into an apartment in Windsor, ON. We didn't have a lot of time to find a place, so we decided on the apartment fairly quickly, without inspecting it too much. I've never lived in an apartment before and I'm also from the states, so I wasn't sure what problems to look for (besides major damages and such). When we moved in, I noticed some weird looking stuff on the ceiling in the bathroom, but a friend assured me it wasn't black mould. My boyfriends mother is a housekeeper and noticed that and some mould in our (future) baby room up near the window. We also recently found out that the landlord had put this fake hardwood flooring OVER old carpet. My boyfriends mom said that is why it sometimes smells musty in here when it's humid. She said its possible that the carpet is mouldy. I have horrible allergies and I'm afraid for my babies health when he's born, if all of this turns out to be black mould.

Do we contact the landlord first or the health department? I really don't want to move out because besides the possible mould, I love the apartment and it would be such a pain to move again while I'm so pregnant. I've heard that using white vinegar will get rid of the mould, but in the bathroom it would be a bit difficult because the ceiling is like in an office building (large drywall tile things, or something?). Also the carpet/fake hardwood covers both bedrooms and the living room/dining room.
