Our neighbor started smoking outside, now we can't enjoy our yard/pool. what to do?

Perhaps you could write your neighbor a nice letter, explaining that you doubt he is aware that his smoke is bothering you, but that it has truly inconvenienced you.

Here is an article that has some other info that should interest you:

"When Secondhand Smoke Invades Your Home"

- Homeowners & renters can take action against cigarette-smoking neighbors."

If he doesn't take the hint from your nice letter, you could forward him a copy of that article.

Nothing brilliant comes to mind. Lacking that, maybe get the biggest guy you can find to "cannon-ball" into the pool, tossing a huge wave over that way, or pick out some obnoxious music to blast until he retreats. Or maybe get a big "warehouse" fan to blast in his direction? Sorry. Good luck.

I am sorry to tell you the air outside belongs to God and he lets the wind blow where it will. What your neighbor does is none of your concern and I doubt really you smell anything you only see and assume it.If you are smelling one cigar in your home best to start looking inside there because that's not really possible. You did not say a deplux so I am assuming its a single family home. You can always plant some good smelling roses or other flowers and really enjoy your yard.Plant a fast growing Leyland hedge and that should fix the problem.

Live and let live.

Our neighbor across the alley has taken to smoking these terrible-smelling cigars. The odor is so strong and bad it can even get into our house if we leave open the sliding glass door. We're not on unfriendly terms, we just don't chat aside from hi if we see each other (which is infrequent). We have a pool and are very upset at the prospect of retreating inside whenever he lights up, which is how we've been handling things up to now. we know this cannot continue as he smokes 'any ol' time'. we don't want to start an argument or make him upset, but this is so unfair! My husband and I have even discussed the idea of offering to buy some kind of air filter. Advice? Ideas? We want to be good neighbors but not be miserable!
