Asbestos dust can cause serious medical problems. Unfortunately, when you removed the tiles you stirred up dust. The tools you used as well as anything else that touched the tiles, including the air in your house, is now contaminated. Normally this work is only done by professionals with special equipment.

You need to contact an asbestos abatement company to inspect your home and dispose of the asbestos according to federal regulations. Click on the link below for more information.

Call your child's doctor and have her tested since children are the most vulnerable. If the child tests positively then you and your husband also need to be tested.

You are probably fine. Breathing in the dust is the problem and most people are not exposed to it in sufficient quantities to do any harm. Since you have already removed them while they were wet, your risk is minimal. Have your child checked out if you need that peace of mind, but the chance that they will find anything related to this is EXTREMELY small.

Properly disposing of the tiles means contacting a local government agency to ask what methods they require for the disposal of the material.

You are probably ok. Breathing the dust is what is dangerous. Removing asbestos tiles is not a dusty job. The fact that you kept the area moist made it even less likely.

There is no test that a doctor can give you or your child.

The Chlorox you used was probably more harmful to your lungs than the wet asbestos.

There is a product for cleaning flooded areas and it does not contain bleach. You can search the product online. It's non-toxic and specifically for flooded basements, etc.

This asbestos fear is ridicules. Only those who worked in asbestos dust for 30 or 40 years have related health problems. Plus you say it was wet, how can you inhale wet dust? Did you spend years doing this?

Here in the UK you would have to use a specialist asbestos contractor for all of that. Smashing them is bad - its the dust that causes the problems.

Our basement flooded! We don't have flooding insurance, so all the work have to be done by us. We had wood laminate and underneath asbestos tiles. After we remove the laminate, and started cleaning the walls and floors with Clorox and water, we noticed that the tiles were coming off. So we decided to remove them. We added more water to the floor so that the times were fully moist-wet. At the very end, the tiles were harder to remove, we smashed them for easier removal. We put the remains on plastic bags. I am not sure if we should go and get tested for anything? Is there anything on the flood that we should be worried about? -there is only paint on the cement floor- we have a 14 month old, does the remains of these ties can cause any harm to her? And lastly, how should we dispose of them?

Thank you very much for your response!
