One if they're indeterminate (vining) tomatoes, 2 if they're determinate (bush) tomatoes. Tomatoes in the ground have roots that can run 6 feet deep.
Multiple plants will compete with each other, and crowded plantings are more subject to diseases.

I would say 4-5 one near each corner and one in the middle. I have 1 ft square containers and put a tomato in one corner a pepper on the other and trellis cukes up the middle, then I throw in a few marigolds in the open spaces, sometimes an onion or some garlic too
maximum 2 as they need the space to grow.
3 to 4.....but not too much close....
I have 20 gallon containers over a foot deep and 2 feet across. How many super 100, romas, beefsteaks, or rutgers could I fit in a single container?
