It think it's a great idea to mix up traditional and modern. It's the era that we're in. Have you seen Felt Ball Rug's website? It's a fair-trade rug company that works with women in Nepal and their rugs are beautiful! The rugs are someone modern but I think they go nicely with more traditional decor and it all depend on the colors and design you choose. They just released a new design tool.

You can combine things by using a unifying color scheme, what I wouldn't do is have one room classic and the next room modern, since good furnishing are well designed and can stand the test of time they often can be combined. It takes a steady hand, and eye, but it makes for the most interesting and personal rooms.

The name of this style is eclectic, and you might want to do a little Google research to see what I mean.
